অধ্যাপক আবু আহমেদ

অধ্যাপক আবু আহমেদ ১ সেপ্টেম্বর ২০২৪ তারিখে ইনভেস্টমেন্ট কর্পোরেশন অব বাংলাদেশ (আইসিবি) এর পরিচালনা বোর্ডের চেয়ারম্যান হিসেবে যোগদান করেছেন। তিনি দেশের একজন শীর্ষস্থানীয় অর্থনীতিবিদ এবং পুঁজিবাজার বিশেষজ্ঞ। বাংলাদেশের পুঁজিবাজারের উন্নয়নে একক ব্যক্তি হিসেবে তার অবদান উল্লেখযোগ্য।

 

শিক্ষাজীবনে তিনি ঢাকা, ইসলামাবাদ এবং ইয়র্ক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে অধ্যায়ন শেষে  ১৯৭৬ সালে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অর্থনীতি বিভাগে লেকচারার হিসেবে যোগদান করেন এবং ১৯৯৩ সালে প্রফেসর হিসেবে নিয়োগ প্রাপ্ত হন। পেশাগত জীবনে তিনি ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অর্থনীতি বিভাগের চেয়ারম্যান ও সামাজিক বিজ্ঞান অনুষদের ডিন; সদস্য, বোর্ড অব অ্যাডভান্স স্টাডিজ; পরিচালক, সেন্টার ফর অ্যাডভান্স রিসার্চ ইন হিউম্যানিটিজ, ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়; উপদেষ্টা, পোর্টফোলিও ইনভেস্টমেন্ট, দ্যা ডেল্টা লাইফ ইন্স্যুরেন্স কোম্পানি লিমিটেড এবং সরকারের রেভিনিউ রিফর্ম কমিশনের সদস্য হিসেবে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। তিনি সরকারি মালিকানাধীন বাংলাদেশ শিল্প ব্যাংক (বর্তমানে বাংলাদেশ ডেভেলপমেন্ট ব্যাংক পিএলসি) এর পরিচালনা বোর্ডের চেয়ারম্যান হিসেবেও অধিষ্ঠিত ছিলেন।

 

এছাড়া তিনি চট্টগ্রাম স্টক এক্সচেঞ্জের পরিচালক, বাখরাবাদ গ্যাস কোম্পানি লিমিটেড (পেট্রোবাংলা কোম্পানি সাবসিডিয়ারি) এর পরিচালক, জগন্নাথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সিন্ডিকেট এর সদস্য, রাজশাহী, সিলেট শাহজালাল, চট্টগ্রাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধ্যাপক পদের নির্বাচন কমিটি এর সদস্য এবং বাংলাদেশ সিকিউরিটিজ অ্যান্ড এক্সচেঞ্জ কমিশনের উপদেষ্টা কমিটি এর সদস্য হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেছেন।

 

অধ্যাপক আবু আহমেদ এর অর্থনীতি ও পুঁজিবাজার বিষয়ক লেখনি নীতিনির্ধারনী পর্যায়ে সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহণে ব্যাপকভাবে প্রভাবিত করে।

Professor Abu Ahmed

 

Professor Abu Ahmed joined the Investment Corporation of Bangladesh (ICB) as its chairman on September 1, 2024. He is a leading economist and a capital market expert of the country. His individual contribution is very significant in the development of the capital market of Bangladesh.

 

After the completion of higher studies in Dhaka, Islamabad and York University, Professor Ahmed joined Dhaka University as a lecturer in 1976 and later on, he was appointed as a professor of Economics in 1993. In his versatile professional career, he held many important positions in Dhaka University including Chairman of the Economics department, Dean of the Social Science Faculty, member of the Board of Advance Studies, Director of the Center for Advance Research in Humanities. He was also an advisor of the Portfolio Investment of The Delta Life Insurance Limited and a member of the Revenue Reform Commission of the government of Bangladesh. In addition, he served as a Chairman of the board of directors of the state owned Bangladesh Shilpa Bank (Bangladesh Development Bank PLC).

 

Professor Ahmed was also a director of Chittagong Stock Exchange, director of Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company Limited (a subsidiary company of Petrobangla). He also played his role as a member of the advisor panel of Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission, a syndicate member of Jagannath University and a member of the Professor Selection Committee of RU, CU and SUST.

 

Professor Ahmed wrote extensively on Economics and capital market issues which play an extreme role in decision making process for the policy makers.

গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশ সরকার, অর্থ মন্ত্রণালয়, আর্থিক প্রতিষ্ঠান বিভাগের প্রজ্ঞাপন অনুযায়ী জনাব নিরঞ্জন চন্দ্র দেবনাথ ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক হিসেবে ইনভেস্টমেন্ট কর্পোরেশন অব বাংলাদেশ (আইসিবি) তে ২০ ফেব্রুয়ারি ২০২৫ তারিখে যোগদান করেন। আইসিবিতে যোগদানের পূর্বে তিনি রাজশাহী কৃষি উন্নয়ন ব্যাংকের ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক, সোনালী ব্যাংক পিএলসি এর উপ-ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক ও চীফ এন্টি মানি লন্ডারিং কমপ্লায়েন্স অফিসার (ক্যামেলকো), বেসিক ব্যাংক লিঃ এ উপ-ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক এবং চিফ ফিন্যান্সিয়াল অফিসার হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। জনাব নিরঞ্জন চন্দ্র দেবনাথ ১৯৯৭ সালে বেসিক ব্যাংক লিমিটেড এ সহকারী ব্যবস্থাপক হিসেবে কর্মজীবন শুরু করেন। তিনি চট্টগ্রাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে হিসাব বিজ্ঞানে স্নাতকোত্তর ডিগ্রী অর্জন করেন। তিনি ইনস্টিটিউট অফ কস্ট অ্যান্ড ম্যানেজমেন্ট অ্যাকাউন্ট্যান্টস অফ বাংলাদেশের একজন ফেলো মেম্বার (এফসিএমএ)। এছাড়াও তিনি যুক্তরাজ্যের চার্টার্ড ইনস্টিটিউট অব ম্যানেজমেন্ট অ্যাকাউন্ট্যান্টস থেকে সিজিএমএ এবং সিএমএ ডিগ্রী অর্জন করেন। তিনি আইবিবি’র একজন ডিপ্লোমেট এসোসিয়েট। জনাব নিরঞ্জন চন্দ্র দেবনাথ দেশে ও বিদেশে বিভিন্ন প্রশিক্ষণ কর্মসূচি ও সেমিনারে অংশগ্রহণ করেন।

Mr. Niranjan Chandra Debnath joined Investment Corporation of Bangladesh (ICB) as the Managing Director on 20 February 2025, ‍as per a notification issued by Financial Institutions Division, Ministry of Finance, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. Prior to joining ICB, he served Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) as the Managing Director, Sonali Bank PLC as the Deputy Managing Director & Chief Anti-Money Laundering Compliance Officer (CAMLCO) and BASIC Bank Limited as the Deputy Managing Director & Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Mr. Niranjan Chandra Debnath started his banking career as an Assistant Manager at BASIC Bank Limited in 1997 and worked extensively across all key areas of banking in diverse capacities. Mr. Debnath has completed his postgraduation in Accounting from Chittagong University. He achieved CMA degree from the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Bangladesh and he is a fellow (FCMA) of ICMAB. He has also obtained CGMA and CMA degrees from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), UK. He is a Diplomaed Associate of IBB. Mr. Niranjan Chandra Debnath participated in various training programs and seminars at home and abroad and travelled widely at different countries of Europe and Asia.
